THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY" CELEBRATES AGATHA CHRISTIE'S 120th BIRTHDAY on SEPTEMBER 15 |
|
Love is Murder presents a free mini-con, "The Body in the Library", celebrating the birthday of the grand dame of mystery, Agatha Christie. It will be held at the Schaumburg Township Library from 6:30 to 8:00pm on Christie's birthday Wednesday, Sept. 15.
"The Body in the Library" will feature a discussion with Jamie Freveletti, author of Running Dark and Running from the Devil, and Libby Fischer Hellmann, author of Doubleback, Easy Innocence, A Shot to Die For, An Image of Death, A Picture of Guilt and An Eye for Murder.
Freveletti and Hellmann will discuss the writing process, especially as it relates to women who are raising families or holding down full-time jobs while writing. In observance of Agatha Christie's birthday in 1890, the speakers will also answer questions about how they see mystery writing then versus now: Was it easier to publish in the mid-'40s, when Christie was at her most prolific? Less time-consuming for an author who concentrated solely on writing rather than book promotion and building relationships with readers?
Attendees will be invited to join in the discussion and share their writing experiences. At the end of the evening, a drawing will be held for a free Master Class at LIM's 2011 conference (value $75). There is no charge for the event and no pre-registration is required.
The Library is located at 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg, at the corner of Schaumburg and Roselle Roads in the Town Square shopping center, |

GHOST OF HONOR--Chester Gould 1900-1985 |
For 80 Years of Continuous Crime Stopping
As always, Love is Murder likes to honor the writers who, through their characters and craft, have helped define and refine the genre fiction we all know and love. This year's GOH is Chester Gould, creator of everyone's favorite jut-jawed, hard-boiled copper, Dick Tracy. Otto Penzler's and Chris Steinbrenner's THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MYSTERY AND DETECTION, among many other standard references, declares Dick Tracy the most famous detective in fiction, with the exception of the character created by last year's GOH, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It is fitting that we celebrate Gould the year after celebrating Doyle, because it represents an actual lineage. Doyle was one of Gould's biggest influences. I say one of his influences because Gould was in the right time and the right place to have a lot of influences ripe for fictional rendition--Prohibition-era Chicago--that of Al Capone, Eliot Ness, speak easies, Tommy guns, and two major syndicates that challenged a young man to fight fictional crime--the Mob and the Chicago Tribune's national newspaper syndicate.
Please join Love is Murder in honoring Chester Gould and his crime fighting alter ego, Dick Tracy by attending [Lifelong Tracy fan] Jim Doherty's informative and fascinating look into the man and his character. |
